Wesleyan to Add Track and Cheer in 2020

Wesleyan to Add Track and Cheer in 2020

MACON, Ga - The Wesleyan College Athletics Department officially announced today that track will be added to its list of NCAA sanctioned sports at the College in 2020. Wesleyan College has hired William Ayears to oversee the program along with the Cross Country program. Coach Ayears comes to Wesleyan with years of experience both as a runner and as a coach. Ayears was a captain on the Washington State University team and was also a member of the US National Men's Track and Field Team. Most recently, in 2013, Coach Ayears was named to the Community Colleges of Spokane (Washington) Track and Field Hall of Fame. Coach Ayears has spent the past twelve years coaching at various levels and building programs in Washington and Georgia.

Athletics Director Penny Siqueiros is very excited about this announcement and with Coach Ayears accepting the challenge. "We are so very excited to add track this coming season to our sanctioned sports for the College. Any time a department can add selections is a great time. In 2019 we announced that we are re-instating our Volleyball program and now in 2020 we will be adding to our program. When we set out to start this process, we knew we had to find a championship-caliber coach and we feel we have found that in Coach Ayears," she said about adding track this season.

Also being added to the Department this coming year is a Cheer program. In 2019, a student lead club team was developed and the interest took off with a full head of steam. AD Penny Siqueiros noticed the passion and the desire of the student body to want this program on campus and has delivered. In 2020; the Wolves will have an official Cheer team that will be participating in athletic events from soccer to basketball.

"Adding a cheer program to Wesleyan was something that just seemed right to do. The student lead team we had this past season took off without a hitch. The cheerleaders in that group raised their own money, did their own choreography, stunts, and held their own practices. The College and student body really seem to want this and we are thrilled to be able to give them this opportunity," Siqueiros said about adding cheerleading this coming year.

It is a very exciting time to be part of Wolf Nation. While other programs are closing doors and reducing sports; Wesleyan is adding programs and competing at such high levels. The 2020-2021 year is shaping up to be one for the history books.
