USA South Postpones Fall Sport Competition

USA South Postpones Fall Sport Competition

On Tuesday, the USA South Conference announced that they would be postponing the fall 2020 seasons and moving them to the spring. According to the official release, "The Presidents of the USA South Athletic Conference have voted unanimously to postpone all fall sport conference competition until the spring 2021 semester. The sports impacted are football, men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, men's cross country, and women's cross country. This decision was made in light of several factors, including the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases throughout the USA South's geographical footprint. Other major factors include the availability, cost, and feasibility of adequate and consistent testing for student athletes."

While Wesleyan College understands this decision might come as a disappointment to some, the athletics department views this as an opportunity to make the best out of a situation that is beyond any one person's control. "The NCAA has moved to allow athletic programs the chance to be with their teams for 114 days during the fall semester instead of having the normal traditional or non-traditional seasons. This allows our new volleyball program to have their first season together in a practice or scrimmage setting which is an incredible opportunity for a new program. It provides all of our teams the blessing of being around each other, while practicing social distancing guidelines, to build camaraderie. We have several events planned to help our teams stay while providing them safe and healthy space to develop as teams," Athletics Director Penny Siqueiros said.

For several weeks, the Wesleyan athletics department has been making plans that would give our athletes a sense of normalcy in the event official fall sports were moved. "We are looking forward to bringing our athletes to campus and using this time to improve skill levels, host team building events, and begin leadership programs, just as we would in a regular season but with the addition of other fun events." Coach Siqueiros added, "This was a great recruiting season for us. We are very excited to welcome fifty new student athletes to our campus this fall. Having this chance to help these new student athletes build their championship culture within their respective programs is something that energizes our staff."

Events planned for the fall include: Movie on the Lawn, Wesleyan's Got Talent, Fellowship of Christian Athletes events, season holiday decorating contests, Slip and Slide days, bonfires, and smores nights, to name a few.
