Charleston, SC - The Wesleyan College equestrian team rounded out their competitive season at College of Charleston over the weekend of March 4-5, which was highlighted by senior Ashunti Samms's fifth place finish in the Regional Finals.

On Saturday, the Wolves equestrian team competed in their last regular season horse show at the College of Charleston. As is usual at College of Charleston, who was the national reserve team champion in 2014, the competition was tough and the classes were large. Despite the level of competition, several Wesleyan riders persevered to earn top placings and all of the Wolves riders put in lovely rides. Senior Yuting Bai finished in sixth place in the walk/trot division in her last show. Freshman Catherenne Hogeland continues to improve her placings and brought home a fourth place finish in Advanced walk/trot/canter, while freshman Ashlee Slack rode through a tough situation in the arena to place second in the same division.

On Sunday, team captains Caroline Thompson and Ashaunti Samms competed in the Regional Finals. Both riders were qualified for the Advanced walk/trot/canter division after pointing up to Novice flat this past year. Thompson and Samms both put in lovely rides during the first heat of competition with no mistakes. Thompson finished just outside of the cut off for call backs, while Samms advanced to the final round. She put in a beautiful ride on Bert for her final heat and placed fifth in the region out of 17 riders.

"The amount of improvement that this team has seen over the year is inspiring and motivating as we continue our work in the practice arena. I am very proud of the hard work our riders have been putting in and it is wonderful when that is rewarded at the shows," remarked Wesleyan head coach Jessica Denniston.

The Wesleyan Wolves will compete on campus next during Wesleyan's Spring Schooling Show on April 29.
