Panthers Sweep Wolves in Season Opener

Panthers Sweep Wolves in Season Opener

The Wesleyan Wolves softball team started their season on Sunday with a doublheader at Birmingham Southern. In a very cold start to the season, the Wolves showed great poise against one of the top NCAA Division III teams in the country. During game one, the Wolves gave up four runs in the first inning, a deficit that was overcome and held close until the fifth inning where Birmingham Southern plated seven runs to end the game in the fifth inning.

Game two was a close game to the very end. The Wolves came out swinging, taking an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. They would hold that lead until an error plagued fourth inning would give the Panthers the lead of 7-3. After several key hits from Kassidy Hulett and Lauran Albritton along with a grand slam from Savannah Pollock, the Wolves would end their fifth inning taking back the lead. The Panthers would answer with manufacuring three more runs to ultimately win the game 10-8.

"We put ourselves in a position to win both of these games. We, however, also took ourselves out of the position to win as well due to errors and not executing as we should. Overall, I am very proud of our performance today against one of the best teams in the country. We will go back to the practice field and work on the things we saw today that could make us that much better. It's a great time to be a Wolf and a part of Wolf Nation. Hopefully we will see this team again in the NCAA championships," Head Coach Penny Siqueiros said of her team's performance.
