Softball Splits with Maryville

Softball Splits with Maryville
For the first time in series history, dating back to the 2009 season, the Wolves softball program took a win away from the Scots of Maryville in a very important conference win.

RECAP
On Tuesday, the Wesleyan Wolves took on the Scots from Maryville, Tennessee in an afternoon softball doubleheader.  The two schools ended up splitting the twin bill, with Wesleyan winning the opener, 3-2 and Maryville taking the second game, 4-1. This is the first time in series history that Wesleyan has beaten Maryville. Both schools are part of the West Division of the USA SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE and the games counted in the standings.  With their wins, Wesleyan raised its Conference record to 2-4 and Maryville to 4-5.  For the season, Wesleyan's record improves to 6-14.

In the two games with the Scots, the Wolves continued to show steady improvement in all phases of the game.  No longer are the Wolves making the costly mistakes that earlier in the season would put a game quickly out of reach.  Could it be that the Wolves are on their way to "learning how to win?"  It sure looks like it!

BATTING HIGHLIGHTS
Wesleyan outhit Maryville in the two games, 15 to 12.  The Wolves' offense was led by:
Catcher-centerfielder Savannah Pollock who went 4 for 7, with a run scored.
First baseman Jendayi Wright also had a productive day at the plate, going 3 for 7 and a run scored.
Left fielder-pitcher Lauran Allbitton also went 3 for 7, with a run scored and an RBI.
And, not to be outdone, Tihana Zupanic contributed 2 hits in 5 at-bats, with a run scored and 2 RBIs.

Unfortunately, many other well-struck balls by the Wolves ended up being hit directly at well-positioned Maryville outfielders.  But that's the nature of the game.  Sometimes the hits fall, sometimes they don't.  Keep swinging those bats, ladies!

PITCHING HIGHLIGHTS
In the first game, ace right-hander Kimberly Dick had an excellent outing in the circle.  Kimberly pitched a complete game, yielding 5 well-scattered hits, only one walk while striking out 10 Scots.  Nicely done, Kimmie!

FIELDING
Wesleyan's play in the field continues to make marked improvement.  Although they were unable to pull out the win, it was still good to see the Wolves play error-less ball in the second game.

LOOKING FORWARD
Wesleyan will be playing two double headers this weekend against Agnes Scott.  Saturday's games will be away, starting at Noon and 2:00pm.  Sunday's games will be at home, starting at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.

Tune in fans and don't miss the action!
