Wesleyan basketball held its 2018-2019 opening home game this past Saturday against Methodist University. The Wolves were down 16 at the half, but mounted a defensive stand in the third quarter as they held the visiting Monarchs to just 6 points while recording 5 team steals. The lead was cut to single digits with just over a minute left before the final period, but that was as close as the Wolves would get. Despite a 19 point fourth quarter, that included 11 from Diedre Maxwell who shot 4 for 6 with a three pointer, Methodist pulled away as they mounted 25 points in the fourth to solidify the 70-53 win.

Maxwell finished with 18 points, while TK Blount added 15 points and 8 rebounds to go along with 7 steals and a blocked shot. After the game, Wolves Head Coach Kyle Herring said, "I thought we fought hard for the most part. We had some mental lapses that hurt us. Some of those are fatigue based. Having 6-7 players hurts us. I was pleased we cut our turnovers down. We can still do a much better job with that. However this is a process. We have five freshmen and we will continue to work and continue to improve."

Despite the losing effort, Wesleyan had one of the most spirited and well attended basketball games in program history. The crowd?s enthusiasm rang loudly with excitement in support of the home team.

The Wolves next game is on Monday November, 12th at Berry College. Tip off is at 6:00 PM.
