Wolves play tough, drop one to Mountaineers

Macon, GA- The Wesleyan Wolves welcomed the Mountaineers of Berea College to Porter Gymnasium for Luau Night at Wesleyan College dropping a tough match-up to the current CCS leading Mountaineers by a final of 73-60. Mia Walker led the Wolves with 20 points shooting 5-16 from the field including 3 of 6 from 3 point land and 7 of 9 from the freethrow line. Otashae Burrage and Destiny Grider were also in double figures finishing with 17 and 14 points respectively. Burrage also led the Wolves with 6 assists on the night. Janiya Simmons was a force in the paint pulling down a game high 13 rebounds to go along with 5 points, while Briscia Tejada rounded out the Wolves 5 with 4 points and 7 rebounds.

The Wolves were able to keep the match up with the Mountaineers tight through sheer determination making up for height mismatches with tenacity to limit the Mountaineers to single chances on their end of the court, while shooting at a high percentage offensively led by the outside shooting duo of Walker and Burrage who finished 6 for 11 on the night from behind the arc. The Wolves trailed by a basket after the first quarter and were able to stay within striking distance trailing by 7 after the first 20 minutes of play. Berea showed some adjustments at the half playing more inside out offense and using their height to their advantage scoring 14 points in the paint in the third quarter to extend their lead to 13 points at 52-39, where it would stay through the 4th quarter as the Wolves playing short handed for half the quarter matched the Mountaineers 21-21 led by Walker who scored 10 of her 20 in the final 10 minutes.

The Wolves will be setting up cots in the locker room as they have a quick turnaround welcoming Maryville to campus for another CCS match up at 2pm on Saturday 1/27.
