Wolves Show Heart But Come Up Short To Montreat 5-4

(Macon, GA) - The Wesleyan College tennis team took on Montreat College Thursday in a tough, nail-biting match that ended with Montreat winning 5-4. After going down 3-0 in doubles, the Wolves came howling back and won four out of six singles to close out the match. Three Wesleyan players had their first collegiate match wins in singles. 

After losing the first set 6-2 in her match, sophomore Celeste Zhang at #3 singles staged a comeback winning the second set and the eventual match in a 3rd set tiebreak by a score of 14-12. This match win marked the first of her collegiate career.
 
The second Wesleyan player to earn her first collegiate match win was first year Idaleen Scoggins, who regrouped after doubles and had a spectacular singles match winning in dominating fashion 6-2, 6-0 against Allison Merrill of Montreat.
 
First year Rungano Nyamayedenga also earned her first collegiate match win, defeating Montreat's Emily Wells 6-2, 7-5. 
 
Other notables:
  • Senior Elizabeth Launi lost a close match at #6 singles 6-3, 6-3
  • #1 Doubles team consisting of first year Erin Laffey and senior captain Centara Nulf fought hard and were up in their match 6-2, but could't find a way to close out the solid play of Elizabeth Beary and Hayley Taylor of Montreat.  They were defeated 9-7.

"Throughout this season, this team has showed massive amounts of heart and grit-- today was a perfect example of that. Although we started off a bit slow in doubles, this team did a fantastic job of regrouping and finding their rhythm in singles," Coach Kosicki stated. "We have a determined group of women on this team and I am very proud of the work they've been putting in. The improvements that I've noticed from match to match are remarkable."
