Wesleyan to Reinstate Cross Country for 2017 Season

"

Macon, GA - After a four year hiatus, the Wesleyan College Department of Athletics has decided to bring back its cross country program beginning in the fall of 2017. Alex Kosicki, head coach of the Wolves tennis program, will serve as the team's head coach.

Associate Athletics Director Nicky DiMarzio states, ""As the Wesleyan Athletic Department continues to grow, adding cross country back to our intercollegiate offerings seemed to be a natural step. We have already gained student, faculty, staff, and administrative support and interest and believe cross country will be one of our most competitive teams. We have a great pool of existing students and student athletes who will not only get the chance to represent Wesleyan, but who will immediately be competitive in the USA South Athletic Conference.""

Kosicki has been tasked with recruiting a team on short notice, but the excitement for the return of cross country amongst existing students on campus is high and there has been a great deal of interest expressed by current athletes and incoming students. ""I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity to coach cross country at Wesleyan College,"" adds Kosicki. ""I truly think that by adding cross country back, Wesleyan Athletics is heading in a really great direction. The Athletics Department worked incredibly hard to add another intercollegiate varsity sport to our athletics family, and cross country now has a home at Wesleyan once again. In a day and age where schools are defunding varsity sports at an alarming rate, Wesleyan is adding sports and it's really a special thing to be a part of. I look forward to our women competing in our new conference and hope to see people come out to cheer them on.""
The reinstatement of cross country next year is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of people on the Wesleyan campus. When reflecting on the work of the past year, DiMarzio adds, ""This past year has been one in which we have made great strides to expand our footprint, increase participation and support, and think outside the box. These efforts will all come to fruition in the 2017-18 school year. We will roll out cross country, we are updating our website, and we have also partnered with our Business Administration department to champion a sports management major and minor program which will be co-taught between the two departments. The Wesleyan administration has been supportive in our efforts and not only sees the value athletics can bring to our campus community, but continues to go above and beyond to ensure our program's stability and success. Finishing out her final year as Wesleyan President, Ruth Knox has been a true champion of athletics, consistently pushing for the growth of our department. As a former athletics alum, she has been one of our biggest fans and has done a tremendous job bolstering the department.""
