Wolves drop season opener to CIU

Wolves drop season opener to CIU

Macon, GA- The Wolves Softball team kicked off their season this Saturday 2/10 against the Rams of Columbia International University dropping the match ups by finals of 13-6 and 9-1. Leading the way for the Wolves was Freshman third baseman Sydnee Mcelveen who finished the day 3 for 5 with a double and 4 RBI. Mcelveen, a Macon native and graduate of Howard High School, was making her Wolves debut and brought home CCS Player Of The Week honors for her efforts. Senior Samantha Bowen matched Mcelveen with 3 hits on the day as well scoring a run and swiping a base, while Sophomores Katelyn McCord and Saunya Sawyers and Freshman Kayla Ocanas all finished with 2 hits a piece.

Game 1

The Wolves offense showed it could be formidable this season racking up 14 hits in route to 6 earned runs in game 1. A tough second inning in which the CIU Rams took advantage of 3 walks and a Wolves error leading to 8 runs proved to be too deep a hole for the Wolves to pull themselves out of. Freshman Makayla Tomlinson entered the circle and did her best to keep the Wolves in the game putting up zeros in the 3rd and 4th inning with some help from the Wolves defense who managed a double play in each inning. In the bottom of the 4th singles by Sydney Salamone and Saunya Sawyers followed by a walk to Samantha Bowen would load the bases for Mcelveen with 2 outs in the inning. The Freshman delivered with a booming linedrive into the outfield that cleared the bases and brought the score to 9-4 CIU. The Rally was cut short as Makayla Tomlinson smashed a linedrive right back up the middle that was caught by the Rams pitcher to end the inning.  The Rams were able to answer in the top of the 5th with 4 more runs putting them back up 13-4. Freshman Kayla Ocanas entered the circle and shut down the Rams rally with a strikeout to bring her team back to the plate. Singles by Ocanas and Freshman Mercadie Deleon put two runners on for the Wolves with 2 outs. Freshman Alexus Humphries pinch hit for Sawyers and hit a line drive into right field to drive Ocanas and Deleon home and make the score 13-6 Rams where it would remain for the rest of the game.

Game 2

The Rams managed to once again jump out to a lead plating 3 in the first inning against pitcher Kayla Ocanas who finished the inning with two strikeouts. The top of the Wolves lineup battled back as Sabrina Bowen led off with a walk and scampered all the way to third on a Sam Bowen single. Mcelveen hit a towering blast to center field that was caught, but was deep enough to score Bowen from third getting the Wolves on the board. The Wolves continued to put the ball in play, but were unable to break through the CIU defense as they finished the game with only 1 strikeout but managed only 3 hits in the 9-1 loss.

The Wolves have a bit of a break as their next scheduled competition will take place on the road as they travel north for a pair of double headers with the Brevard College Tornados on Saturday February 24th and the Salem College Spirits on February 25th.
